What is TMS?
Brainsway’s Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a safe, non-invasive treatment that stimulates the part of the brain associated with major depressive disorder (MDD).
How does it work?
During the session, you’ll be fitted with a helmet-like device that delivers a magnetic pulse that activates certain regions of the brain. You may hear clicking sounds and feel a tapping sensation on your head.
How often do I need treatment?
TMS is an outpatient treatment that requires 20-minute sessions each weekday for about 5-6 weeks, then decreases to twice a week for up to three more weeks.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are rare but may include:
- Scalp discomfort at the site of stimulation
- Tingling, spasms or twitching of facial muscles
There is no anesthesia or sedation, so you should be able to drive yourself to and from treatments and resume normal activities immediately afterward.
I’m a healthcare professional. Can I refer a patient?
Clinicians can refer a patient by calling the Valleywise Health TMS care team at (480) 344-2128 or by Fax at (480) 344-0218.
