When your child is in need of emergency care, the only thing on your mind is getting them the help they need as quickly as possible. You can breathe easy knowing we'll be here to care for them every step of the way.

When you bring in your child for emergency treatment, we know time is of the essence. We’re just as concerned about your child’s health and well-being as you are, and you can count on us to offer them the care, comfort and compassion they need to heal.

Our pediatric emergency patients are treated around the clock with prompt and dedicated care according to their specific needs. They are always given follow-up referrals for continued care when necessary. The Valleywise Health Pediatric Emergency Department provides care for infants, children, and adolescents up to age 17.

Valleywise Health’s Pediatric Emergency Department has achieved “Prepared Advanced Care,” the highest certification awarded by the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AzAAP). The AzAAP also has certified our pediatric ED as a Pediatric Prepared Emergency Care facility until 2027.

The PPEC program is a partnership between hospitals, physicians, nurses, and emergency personnel, AzAAP and the Emergency Medical Services for Children program at the Arizona Department of Health Services

Treatments

Acute Emergency Care

Acute care refers to short-term treatment for severe injuries, episodes of illness or other urgent medical conditions. This includes:

  • Traumas (including burn, penetrating trauma and blunt trauma)
  • Broken bones
  • Heart and asthma attacks
  • Head injuries

Chronic Medical Care

Chronic emergency medical care refers to treatment of pre-existing or long-term illnesses. Patients who are treated for chronic medical conditions in our clinic have either been previously diagnosed or are given a diagnosis in our care based on emergency symptoms. Common chronic medical conditions include:

  • Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Gastrointestinal diseases

Pediatric Acute Care

The Pediatric Acute Care Unit provides inpatient services for newborns, infants, children and adolescents up to the age of 18.

We admit pediatric patients on referral from physicians and hospitals throughout Arizona and from Valleywise Health clinics, trauma services, operating rooms and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Easing your child’s pain is a top priority, and we’ll work hard to develop a pain management plan that’s best for them. We’ll also provide a sedation service if your child ever needs painful treatments or diagnostic tests.
