We train nearly 800 medical students just like you every year. During your rotations, you’ll gain valuable experience and actively participate in activities that will enhance your clinical decision-making skills and offer you the ability to work closely with residents, attending physicians, residency program directors and other allied health professionals. We have over 240 full-time physician faculty and more than 300 residents involved in our undergraduate medical education programs, all of whom are eager to connect with you, learn alongside you and help you grow.

How to Apply

As a student, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in up to four rotations during the academic year. To be considered for acceptance, you’ll need to submit your applications and all required documentation to the appropriate departments between 75 to 90 days in advance, depending on department policy.

Here is a list of required documents:

  • Curriculum vitae or biographical sketch
  • Letter of Good Standing (excludes Observers) – It must include the rotation and exact start and end dates
  • Copy of your school ID, passport or state-issued ID card
  • Signed Acknowledgment of Confidentiality
  • Verification of HIPAA training (This can be included in the Letter of Good Standing including the date if given at school)
  • Background check: If your medical school can’t provide written verification of your background check, a Valleywise Health online background check is required (for a fee). We will accept a DPS Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card in place of a background check.
  • Proof of current Basic Life Support Certification
  • Documentation of a cleared drug screen
  • Proof of the following immunizations in the format of either a summary report from the school, MIHS or AAMC immunization sheet. Health records and lab reports will not be accepted.
    • MMR
    • Hep B
    • Varicella (Chicken Pox) Titer
    • Tetanus (within 10 years), Tdap
    • TB (within 1 year), CXR or Quantiferon
    • Flu Vaccine (seasonal)

Clerkships and electives

We offer required third-year core clerkships and fourth-year electives and make every effort to meet your educational needs. Our fourth-year electives are open to students from across the country and schools in the Caribbean.

If you are a fourth-year student in a LCME- or COCA-accredited school, please check with your school to see if they are participating in the VSAS program. If your school is currently enrolled, you will need to apply for your electives through VSAS.

Advances Practice Rotations (Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Students)

There is a limited availability for NP (Nurse Practitioner) and PA (Physician’s Assistant) student rotations in some of our programs. Please contact the program directly to inquire about rotations.
