Thank you for your interest in our sub-internship rotation at Valleywise Health. This rotation is designed to expose you to all aspects of emergency medical care. We envision your visit to be a positive experience. In addition to hosting 4th-year medical students from Creighton University, we welcome students from around the country.

We accept up to 6 senior medical students per month. Students must be in good standing from an accredited US Medical school.

Due to our mission of training physicians in the specialty of Emergency, those students with a planned career in Emergency Medicine will be accepted for rotation positions from August through January. As such, the prospective student rotator’s submitted application for rotation must be accompanied by a brief cover letter addressing their interest in both in Emergency Medicine and Valleywise Health. The letter should be no more than 250 words. Applications without a letter of interest will be considered incomplete.

Didactics

There will be didactics sessions including high stakes simulation, ultrasound hands on session, and airway lab. We use a flipped classroom approach whenever possible. In addition, Wednesday Resident Conferences are held from 7:30 – 12:30 p.m. The lecture hours include weekly Morbidity and Mortality cases, renowned guest lecturers, resident lectures, Paramedic Tape and Chart reviews, and “Tales From The Pit” (which is the residents chance to share interesting cases seen in the Emergency Department).

Experience

As a medical student, you will be expected to see and evaluate patients in the Emergency Department. After evaluation of the patient, you will be expected to present the history, physical exam, assessment and plan to the attending. You will work closely with the Residents, as well.

Your scheduled will be given to you at the beginning of the rotation. You are responsible for those shifts. Swapping shifts is acceptable as long as approved in advance.
