Dr. Amelia Van Handel is a Hand and Plastic Surgeon at Valleywise Health Medical Center. She is did her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and went on to graduate from Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Van Handel did her plastic surgery residency training at Washington University in St. Louis and additional fellowship training in Hand and Microsurgery at The Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore before starting at Valleywise in 2023. Dr. Van Handel specializes in treatment of problems of the hand and wrist as well as complex wounds requiring reconstruction throughout the body. She treats both
pediatric and adult patients.
Dr. Van Handel’s hand surgery practice focuses on treatment of upper extremity fractures, tendon lacerations, nerve injuries or compression, arthritis, tenosynovitis, hand and wrist masses, and reconstruction of burns of the upper extremity. She has a particular interest in complex microsurgical reconstruction of the hand and treatment of peripheral nerve injuries.
Her plastic surgery practice specializes in the treatment of wounds created by infection, trauma, or cancer. This includes upper and lower extremity reconstruction as well as microsurgical breast reconstruction, using tissue from another part of your body to reconstruct the area of missing tissue.
Dr. Van Handel is passionate about providing compassionate, thoughtful, and technically excellent surgical and non-surgical treatments for the patients of Valleywise Health.
