  • HIV is a virus that lives in the bloodstream and attacks white blood cells. AIDS is the name for an advanced stage of HIV, where people are at increased risks for cancers and infections.
  • HIV is most commonly transmitted through sexual activity or sharing of syringes. Only certain bodily fluids – blood, semen, rectal fluids, vaginal fluids, and breast milk – can transmit the virus.
  • People can live with HIV infection for years or decades with zero symptoms, so it’s important to take preventative measures and get tested often if you are at increased risk.
