In This Article:

  • Acid reflux occurs when acidic contents in the stomach re-enter the esophagus. The presence of the high acidic content creates a burning pain in the lower chest.
  • Acid reflux can be caused by certain foods (especially those that are spicy and greasy), caffeine, alcohol, smoking, NSAID medications, obesity and more.
  • Alka-Seltzer, Maalox, Mylanta, Rolaids and Tums may help with short-term relief. If you still have heartburn after trying at-home remedies, talk to your doctor about H2 blockers, antacids and possibly surgery.
