One Year of Care and Commitment at Valleywise Health

Reflecting on a Major Milestone

One year ago, Valleywise Health reached a major milestone. After years of planning, building, and preparing, the new Valleywise Health Medical Center officially opened its doors. In a single day, 200 patients were safely moved from the former hospital to this modern facility—an impressive achievement made possible by the collective efforts of dedicated staff.

A Year of Impact

In the 12 months since the move, the team has delivered care at an unprecedented scale. Nearly 73,000 emergency department visits, 15,000 admissions, and 7,500 surgeries highlight the scale of services provided. The lab processed nearly 1.9 million tests, and about 2,700 babies were welcomed into the world. CEO Steve Purves noted, “The numbers over the last year are impressive, and what is more important to remember is that our employees have touched the lives of so many with exceptional care, every patient, every time.”

Beyond these milestones, the medical imaging department served over 128,000 patients and made notable advances. Emergency department imaging increased by nearly 9% compared to the old hospital. Outpatient and inpatient imaging also saw significant growth. New technologies like dual-energy CT scanners improved image quality and reduced radiation exposure, while MRI-guided breast biopsies expanded care options. Valleywise also achieved six new accreditations from the American College of Radiology.

The lab performed 6.6 million tests this year, supported by new full-lab automation systems that ensure efficiency and accuracy. In rehabilitation services, over 76,000 inpatient and outpatient physical therapy/occupational therapy/speech therapy procedures were conducted, helping patients recover and regain mobility.

A State-of-the-Art Facility Built for the Future

The new Valleywise Health Medical Center spans 673,000 square feet across 10 floors. Every patient room is private, designed for comfort and dignity. The emergency department covers 34,550 square feet and features three trauma bays equipped for the most urgent needs. A full floor is home to the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center, one of the top burn centers in the nation.

Powered by People

While the building itself is impressive, what sets Valleywise Health apart is the people who work there every day. Physicians, nurses, technicians, and support staff have embraced new workflows and technology to ensure seamless patient care. Their resilience and dedication turned an empty building into a fully operational hospital, day by day.

Partners in Progress

Gratitude is also extended to the District Medical Group partners, the Valleywise Health Foundation, and the Special Health Care District Board of Directors. Their leadership and support made this transformation possible.

Looking Forward

This one-year anniversary is more than just a milestone—it reflects Valleywise Health’s 140-year legacy of providing care to the community. The same mission that launched the organization continues to guide every step forward.

This celebration marks a year of progress and sets the stage for the future. Valleywise Health remains committed to delivering high-quality care, every day, for everyone in Maricopa County.
