The first signs of mental health or behavioral health issues typically aren’t as obvious as symptoms of physical illnesses. That doesn’t mean they’re any less important.
At Valleywise Health, we’re not only working hard to treat our patients, we’re working to break negative stigmas against mental and behavioral health issues and increase community awareness and access to treatment.
Behavioral and mental illnesses can be caused by a number of different factors, but one fact is true across the board: mental health issues are never the result of personal weakness, lack of character or upbringing.

Getting help early before a crisis arises is critical to providing effective and complete treatment. Many people living with mental and behavioral health issues don’t receive a correct diagnosis and proper treatment for up to 10 years. We’re committed to providing the highest level of screenings, diagnoses, education and treatment to make sure that’s no longer the case.

Your treatment will likely come in the form of medication, counseling or a combination of both. Medications may include antidepressants, anti-anxiety, antipsychotics or mood stabilizers. We will recommend that you attend individual or group sessions, as well. Your treatment plan will largely depend on the severity and duration of your symptoms and your family and individual history.
It can be difficult to pinpoint a certain set of symptoms, as behavioral health conditions appear on a spectrum and vary greatly. However, pay attention to any changes in your normal behavior. This may include loss of interest in previously pleasurable activities, changes in sleeping habits or appetite, increases in alcohol use, constant worrying, uncontrollable mood swings and difficulty interacting in your social, family or work life.
Through integrated behavioral health, medical doctors and behavioral health professionals will work together alongside patients and their families to address medical conditions and related behavioral health factors at once. This is a more well-rounded, comprehensive form of care that addresses all mind and body issues together rather than focusing on just one or the other.
Integrated Behavioral Health Services are available to patients receiving primary care services at any of the Community Health Centers operated by Valleywise Health throughout Maricopa County.
