The first signs of mental and behavioral health issues typically aren’t as obvious as symptoms of physical illnesses are – but that doesn’t mean they’re any less important. At Valleywise Health, we’re not only working hard to treat our patients, we’re working to break negative stigmas against mental and behavioral health issues and increase community awareness and access to treatment.

Behavioral and mental illnesses can be caused by a number of different factors, but one fact is true across the board: mental health issues are never the result of personal weakness, lack of character or upbringing.

Typically, they are caused by a reaction to stress, genetic factors, biochemical imbalances or a combination of these. Common early symptoms of mental and behavioral health issues include, but are not limited to:

• Sudden changes in thoughts and behaviors
• Inability to sleep or being tired for no reason
• Feeling anxious
• Hearing voices

Getting help early before a crisis arises is critical to providing effective and complete treatment. Many people living with mental and behavioral health issues don’t receive a correct diagnosis and proper treatment for up to 10 years, but we’re committed to providing the highest level of screenings, diagnoses, education and treatment to make sure that’s no longer the case.

We believe that full recovery is entirely possible for individuals and their families, especially when they are given timely access to the right treatment.
